USPS to move to 5 day mail delivery starting August 5.
USPS to move to 5 day mail delivery starting August 5. USPS will no longer be delivering and picking up mail on Saturdays.
USPS to move to 5 day mail delivery starting August 5. USPS will no longer be delivering and picking up mail on Saturdays.
All mail will continue to be delivered Monday through Friday. Express and Priority Mail, First-Class packages, Standard Post and Parcel Select will be delivered on Saturdays.
From a mail entry perspective, most mailers will not be affected by the removal of Saturday delivery. BMEUs and large entry facilities, such as SCFs and NDCs, will still be open. The changes for mailers will have more to do with the recipient's response to mail.
Transactional mailersFirst-Class mailers who send out bills and invoices will need to adjust payment dates, or at minimum, notify their customers that the removal of Saturday delivery may delay the posting of their payments.
Advertising mailersSome mail lends itself best to specific in-home dates. Catalogs and other advertising mail linked to a special promotion, coupon or sale creates a sense of urgency. Generally, this is sent Standard Mail and the removal of Saturday delivery may have a large impact here. Most bulk mail is entered on Fridays, and then cleared over the weekend. Local Standard Mail currently gets delivered around Tuesday of the following week. This works well for notifying customers of weekend deals. Removing Saturday delivery will increase the volume received on Mondays, which will trickle down into Tuesdays. These mailers should start tracking their mail now to get a good handle on how their mail currently gets delivered. Keep watch throughout August and September. Printing and other schedules may need to shift earlier to achieve the same in-home dates.
Periodicals mailersWhile monthly Periodicals will not be affected by this change, weekly and daily newspapers and other Periodicals will be hit the hardest by the removal of Saturday delivery. Of course, this is especially true for Saturday and weekend newspapers and magazines. Production schedules will need to shift. Some of these mailers will need to re-evaluate their delivery goals, which could reach into content and layout changes.
